RYA Coastal Skipper

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical (non-tidal)

Coastal Skipper is a more advanced course and includes night navigation, fog navigation much more yacht handling under sail. On completion of this practical course you should be able to do inshore and offshore passages by day and by night. It adds up to a very satisfying but intensive week!

The practical course covers:

  • Passage planning including a consideration of the yacht, navigation, victualling, weather, ports of refuge. Custom procedures.
  • Preparation for sea, engine, rope and maintenance checks etc. Knowledge of safety briefing crew and use of equipment for offshore passages. Delegating responsibilities, watch keeping.
  • Pilotage plan with consideration of soundings, transits, clearing bearings, bouyage, port or harbour regulations.
  • Passage making and ability as skipper taking care of the crew and yacht, organised navigation, deckwork. Awareness of meteorological trends. Understanding use and limitations of electronic navaids including GPS and radar.
  • Preparation for heavy weather and yacht handling in strong winds. Navigation in restricted visibility.
  • Yacht handling under power, controlling the boat effectively in a confined space and berthing in various conditions.
  • Yacht handling under sail, using the sails to control the boat effectively in a confined space. Anchoring and mooring is different conditions of wind and tide. sailing effectively on all points of sail.
  • Emergency situations and how to deal with them, man overboard, fire, distress flares, liferaft, radio mayday, secure a tow and helicopter rescue procedure.
